DDC visita

The Danish Design Center: a collection of lessons learned

  • 10.09.2019
On September 10th 2020, the DesignOBS team visited the Danish Design Center, Copenhagen, one of the leading EU design Centers, with the aim to collect information about existing observation practices of the design ecosystem.

Our host, Cristina Melander, DDC’s programme director, explained the modus-operandi and mission of the Center, underlining the continuous effort to work together with companies, collect successful stories, with impact in multiple sectors, to better communicate the value of design in the economic fabric. DDC aims to lever design within industry, promote the Danish Design brand in the country and beyond. Its actions are focused on business, industry, the design profession, education, research centers as well as public institutions.
Taking this input as a starting point, we observe that, in the portuguese context, these activities are attributed to several entities that operate in a discoordinated manner, resulting in limited understanding of design value and impact on the national economy and social fabric. We look foward to continue this exploratory work, depicting and understanding how leading centers are performing these activities; and develop clearer strategies for design in Portugal.

Thank you to Cristina Melander for all your insights about the Danish case.
